Ralph Sutton made many visits to England during his long career, though this solo performance at the Fox & Hounds in 1975 seems to be one of the few records he made overseas. The veteran stride pianist is in top form, saluting two earlier giants of the genre (Willie "The Lion" Smith and Fats Waller) with rousing interpretations of several of their compositions. But Sutton also displays his lyrical side, particularly during the first two songs of a medley of Willard Robison's songs and Bix Beiderbecke's brilliant "In the Dark." The audience is respectfully quiet until Sutton is through with each selection, and the engineering is first-rate.
