If you're looking for a connecting stylistic thread between the 14 songs included here (other than their lyrical preoccupation with the Yuletide time of year), you're on your own. Sure, there does seem to be a preponderance of teen-pop here (The A*Teens' "I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday," Backstreet Boys' "Christmas Time," etc.). But every time you turn a corner on this disc, you're confronted with another delightfully off-kilter surprise. Behind door number one, there's the old cowboy singing legend Gene Autry with "Here Comes Santa Claus." Peeking around door number two, it's none other than golden-age pop crooner Johnny Mathis delivering "It's Beginning to Look Like Christmas." Perhaps it's best not to try to pigeonhole this compilation, but rather just to let the musical holiday joy seep in.
