AllMusic Review by

Produced by R&B legend H.B. Barnum, Pump Girls is part of a promotion to raise awareness among teens living with diabetes. Who better to deliver the message then Sara Cronstedt (14), Janelle Munion (15), Colleen Cottrell (13), and Brittany Rask (12)? All have Type 1 diabetes. The pump refers to a pager size device that administers the correct amount of insulin into a diabetic's body, eliminating the need for injections. The material ranges from the chanting, cheering "We're the Pump Girls" to the young love saga "Boy" and the "Johnny B Good"-influenced "Not Too Young to Rock and Roll." "Ollie Ollie Oxen (The Hide and Seek Song)" should score among jump rope enthusiasts; "We're Havin' a Party" has a funky dance groove courtesy of Barnum, Walter Johnson, and Bobby Massey (O'Jays); and the lilting "We Care About You" showcases the Pump Girls' vocal blends. The lead singer sexily bends notes on "Winter Sunshine," which features good interplay between the lead and backing voices. They sing about mother and daughter issues on "Young and Free"; a Pump Girl acting as a mom criticizes her daughter for everything from her dress and boys, to hogging the phone. Proceeds from sales will go to Pumps for a Better Life Fund to help diabetic children worldwide.
