Like most releases on Fat Possum (including his first effort, Mule), Paul Jones' second album, Pucker Up Buttercup, boasts a raw, careening sound and enthusiastically gritty performances that makes it an easy album to enjoy. The problem is, there's not much there -- the songs are merely vehicles for the performances. That results in a record that is enjoyable while it's playing, but ultimately a little unmemorable.
