Proud Mary and Other Hits is a skimpy nine-track collection of Ike & Tina Turner's early-'70s work for Liberty Records. It is undoubtedly awe-inspiringly tough and funky music from the dynamic duo: "Proud Mary" is a stone classic, "Sexy Ida" isn't far behind, and their inspired take of "I Want to Take You Higher" almost trumps Sly's original. Between Ike's freaked-out productions and Tina's raw vocals, they weren't just walking the line dividing rock and funk, they were dynamiting it. The problem with this collection is that nine songs aren't nearly enough. Only someone who wants just the barest hint of what the Turners could do might be satisfied. Everyone else needs to look elsewhere to get his or her fill.
