Almost as remarkable as PROTOTYPES AND PAINKILLERS being Strung Out’s ninth full-length for Fat Wreck Chords is the band’s loyalty toward their chosen genre--all-out, three-chord melodic pop-punk. What separates Strung Out--especially after 15 years of recording--from their peers and predecessors is their penchant for speed-metal licks neatly covered under the guise of candy-coated production, which is highlighted best on their gleeful cover of Ozzy Osbourne’s “Bark At The Moon.” That quality alone, along with some lyrical concessions to maturity, renders PROTOTYPES much more than painless.
