The winning combination of John Madden, composer Stephen Warbeck, and Gwyneth Paltrow -- they struck Oscar gold in 1998 with Shakespeare in Love -- reunite for the psychological drama Proof. Warbeck, an ace comedy composer, has constructed a score that's as warm as it is wistful and as lush as it is brooding. The main cue is a taut midtempo exercise in Philip Glass minimalism that utilizes a repetitive Bill Frisell-style guitar line wrapped in layers of dramatic strings. It's far more refreshing than it sounds in print, and Warbeck never lets things go on too long. Proof may be a slow burn, but much like his other work with Madden (Captain Corelli's Mandolin, Shakespeare in Love, and Mrs. Brown), it leaves a scar.
