AllMusic Review by Steve Leggett

Essentially a collection of song demos, Prologue is exactly what the title says it is, a glimpse of Elton John before he perfected his sound, although there are traces of that sound here. Recorded in the late '60s for producer Joe Boyd's Warlock Records, it features John singing songs written by Nick Drake, John Martyn, and Mike Heron, all of whom were also signed to Warlock Records at the time, as well as a pair of songs sung by Linda Peters, who would go on to marry Richard Thompson and become better known as Linda Thompson. The sound quality here isn't the best and it's very obvious that these are song demos rather than completed recordings, but following John's later success, Warlock released Prologue as a limited LP in 1970. This CD was obviously not transferred from the original tapes but lifted directly from one of the surviving copies of that LP. It's historically interesting to hear John before the fame, but there's nothing particularly vital or revelatory here.
