Prog Rock, Vol. 1 is a haphazard but entertaining collection featuring bands from various stylistic branches of the progressive rock tree. There are the heavier sounds of Ten Years After, Deep Purple, and Jethro Tull, the acid folk of Syd Barrett, the early space rock experiments of Hawkwind, and the eccentricities of Van Der Graaf Generator and Gong, to name a few; there's also a very British concentration in the artist selection. It doesn't really define any aspect of the movement, but it is evidence that there was much more to prog rock than just long songs and indulgent soloing.
