This is another fine release accentuating the small groups which are part of the University of Kentucky's outstanding jazz studies program, headed by Miles Osland. Osland is also a Professor of Saxophone, and although other horns are present, it's the sax that dominates on this CD. Not content to sit on the sidelines and watch his students perform, Osland takes an active part in the proceedings on alto and soprano saxes as well as on flute. The CD compiles recordings by various combinations of small groups that make up the program from both live and studio sessions. The configuration of the groups ranges from sax quartets, a duo, and the Profound Gumbo sextet. All of the music is unfamiliar with a definite modern bent and is structured in such a way so as to provide some freedom for the performers to express ideas within the framework of the piece being played. Some cuts have a chamber ambience, as if they were contemporary classical pieces in the manner of a 21st century Baroque style written for saxophones and accompanying instrumentation. The counterpoint, for example, between Chris Barbee and Osland on alto sax and Tom Wallis on baritone on "The Frequent Flyer" is breathtaking. The duo of Osland with Raleigh Dailey on piano creates contrasting syncopation between the two protagonists. Matters get heated with the sextet Profound Gumbo on a swinging, wailing "Union County Line." In addition to outstanding horns, Dailey gets some serious work in on piano. It would have been useful to have included a well-known piece or two to accent the talents of the musicians in a familiar setting. Nevertheless, this is serious music played by highly accomplished jazz artists from one of the better university jazz study programs in the country. Recommended.
