Segs from Ruts D.C./Ruts finally releases a record with his new band, just himself and his girlfriend Violen, and it's lovely. Produced by Mick Glossip (who did Ruts ' The Crack, Skids, and many others), the sound quality is among the best of the year, capturing perfectly the layered, siren-like, dream-inspiring flip side, "Monkey Beat." The A-side is different fare, danceable rhythmic stuff, this side of Ruts D.C.'s "Push Yourself" with a straighter beat, an effectively hard snare slap driving home a back-and-forth shuffle rhythm. It's an obscure French import and it's awfully good.
