Presenting Lee Morgan Review

by Scott Yanow

Trumpeter Lee Morgan's debut as a leader finds him sounding surprisingly mature at the age of 18. On this LP, Morgan welcomes his fellow Philadelphian altoist Clarence Sharpe and an all-star rhythm section (pianist Horace Silver, bassist Wilbur Ware and drummer Philly Joe Jones) for six hard bop selections; best known among the compositions are Benny Golson's "Reggie of Chester" and Donald Byrd's "Little T." Although at this point Morgan was heavily influenced by Clifford Brown (who had died only a few months earlier), his playing was already quite impressive.
