AllMusic Review by

Between 1937-39 composer-pianist Raymond Scott and his six-piece "Quintette" recorded 24 originals that were most notable for their hilarious titles, somewhat bizarre but somehow logical arrangements and tight ensembles. To Scott's surprise, the group caught on for awhile and such numbers as "Powerhouse" and "The Toy Trumpet" became hits. This CD gathers together tapes from Scott's own library of radio broadcasts and rehearsals, all of it previously unissued and two of the performances predating the formation of the Quintette. Certainly occupying their own unique niche, the colorful arrangements somehow fit the titles (which include "Dinner Music for a Pack of Hungry Cannibals," "New Year's Eve in a Haunted House," "Oil Gusher," "Reckless Night on Board an Ocean Liner" and "Bumpy Weather Over Newark!") and one can understand why Carl Stalling was inspired to utilize many of these pieces in Warner Bros. cartoons.
