AllMusic Review by

A love song dropped in the middle of an album about growing up on the rough Compton streets, "Poetic Justice" is Kendrick Lamar's sweet, nostalgic triumph. Here, the rapper combines a Janet Jackson sample (borrowed from her 1993 track "Any Time, Any Place"), the title of a Janet film (the 1993 John Singleton joint that also starred 2Pac), and some vivid love lines right out of Def Poetry Jam ("If I told you that a flower bloomed in a dark room, would you trust it"). Mentions of Atari and Fatal Attraction reinforce the old-school flavor, and offer further proof that Lamar is a master craftsman.
