It seems only right that pianist Paul Bley wrote the liner notes to this CD, for he is an influence on the music of Salvatore Bonafede. Bonafede, who is joined in his trio by bassist Marc Johnson and drummer Paul Motian, is able to swing conventionally (as he shows on "Bluse"), improvise a tango, and play fairly free, yet always sounds somewhat accessible and lyrical. His piano solos are unpredictable yet ultimately logical, his interplay with his sidemen is stimulating, and there is enough variety on this set of originals to hold one's interest throughout. Well worth checking out, although this CD from the defunct Ken label will probably be difficult to locate.
