AllMusic Review by

Beethova Obas is a Haitian acoustic guitar player and singer who records consistently high-quality releases. His own sound consists of Haitian konpa, Brazilian samba, classic Cuban rhythms, and additional ingredients all his own. He blends and mixes this all into a rhythmic and melodic whole that is candy for the ears and sparks for the waist movement. His albums have to be listened to repeatedly and reveal themselves more easily in tropical weather. His skill resides in his inventive use of konpa, managing not to sound like a clone of some of the nouvelle generation artists. Those who enjoyed Chant de la Liberte, Si, and Pa Prese will not be disappointed with Planet La. Standout tracks are "Aboliyson," "Byen Kouvri," "Van Leve," "Degats," and "Ki Bagay." The grooves are mellow yet very sensual and one can envision the hips swaying with not too much effort. Bago, a well-known Martiniquan percussionist, provides the hands on the skins on four tracks. Also featured is Mario Canonge on piano, who is also from Martinique. Thierry Fanfant, a bassist who records on a host of zouk albums, takes the listener below the bassline on most of the tracks. In the chorus are Marie-Celine Chrone, Tony Chasseur, and Tatiana Miath, all well known for their lead and backup vocal work in zouk music circles. Planet La is another well-crafted gem by this artist who continues to develop and make great music.
