AllMusic Review by

A three-LP, 24-song boxed set, Piece de Resistance is the definitive concert bootleg from the Darkness on the Edge of Town tour, taken from a September 19, 1978 New Jersey performance that was broadcast live on radio stations throughout the Eastern seaboard. For many, the Darkness Tour was Springsteen at his best; the showpieces of the set were songs like "Prove It All Night" (extended with a guitar duel between Springsteen and Miami Steve Van Zandt) "Because the Night" (also given a heavy guitar treatment) and a medley of Buddy Holly's "Not Fade Away" with "She's the One." A polished performance focused on the Darkness and Born to Run material, hints of The River arise in early renditions of "Point Blank" and an embryonic "Drive All Night," which appeared in the middle of "Backstreets;" the many encores end with the "Detroit Medley," an arrangement of oldies associated with Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels, and Eddie Floyd's "Raise Your Hand." (Sound quality is good to excellent, with occasional lapses. The performance of "Fire" is incomplete, but otherwise the entire show is included.)
