This out-of-print double LP (there is no Vol. 2) attempts to trace the evolution of bop and beyond piano styles through one selection apiece from 24 different pianists: Duke Ellington, Earl Hines, Art Tatum, Erroll Garner, Thelonious Monk, Bud Powell, Lennie Tristano, Al Haig, George Shearing, John Lewis, Horace Silver, Hampton Hawes, Bobby Timmons, Oscar Peterson, Phineas Newborn, Ahmad Jamal, Red Garland, Wynton Kelly, Bill Evans, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Joe Zawinul, Keith Jarrett and McCoy Tyner. Virtually all of the music is currently available elsehwhere but this sampler does serve the purpose of introducing listeners to the playing of most of the top 1950-75 stylists.
