David Opp's Heart & Crossbone imprint houses some of Israel's most demented sounds. His Cadaver Eyes project spews ragged, artsy grindcore, while his band Lietterschpich unloads huge but digitally damaged doom metal. Barbara, his drum'n'bass duo with Ram Hareuveny, lies somewhere in between. Imagine the caustic, wild-eyed doom of Burning Witch crossed with the dadaist randomness of Fantômas. Songs lurch to and fro, having had two drinks too many. The bass is hairy and distorted, dancing reluctantly with a ramshackle drum kit. Hoarse howls gamely fight through this din -- someone get these guys some water! Behind this racket lies quality, if unorthodox, musicianship. "The Feedbacker" is a jazzy yet tribal percussive meditation, as amps hum overhead. "Pray to Black" clatters away distantly with death metal drums, while "Schnell" deploys precise blasts of feedback like a grimier Godflesh. The lyrics are printed in both Hebrew and English. "Tortured souls caught on videotape/Braindead laughs and smiles ready to masturbate" could be this record's manifesto. Throbbingly electric production wraps up this strangeness, if barely.
