AllMusic Review by

A bright, somewhat nostalgia-laden piece by David Heneker--based on J. Hartley Manners' PEG O' MY HEART- PEG was a starring vehicle for Sian Phillips, but the cast recording is very much a company affair, with a special spotlight for Ann Morrison in the title role. She's sort of a cross here between Bernadette Peters and Helen Kane, with some of Carol Kane's goofiness as well, and is worth the price of admission by herself; not that Martin Smith's presence should be overlooked, or Phillips', for that matter. One needn't have ever seen the play to enjoy the recording, which has a beguiling mix of energy and melody, and characterizations that leap off the record grooves. The 1984 cast album is a superb recording on its own terms, also showcasing the late-career work of producer Norman Newell, who was, for many years, the top cast recording producer in England.
