AllMusic Review by

The renowned 20th century cellist Paul Tortelier recorded exclusively for EMI during most of his career. This 2010 box set includes most of these recordings by this musician, who was a student of Pablo Casals and a teacher (for a short time) of Jacqueline du Pré. In addition to being a comprehensive view of Tortelier's playing, it also covers the greatest works of the cello repertoire, from Bach's suites to Tchaikovsky's Rococo Variations to Richard Strauss' Don Quixote, a piece with which Tortelier became particularly associated. There is even a suite by Tortelier himself. The recordings date from the 1940s to the 1980s, so sound quality does vary.
