Drummer Mat Marucci and saxophonist Doug Webb initially worked together in a quartet with piano and drums, but once the pianist moved away, they found that they had more freedom without having a piano. This live recording, which also features bassist Joe Dolister (a late substitute for their regular bassist, who took ill), draws from the extensive repertoire they built over their years together. "Partners in Crime" is a fiery post-bop number based upon "I Got Rhythm" with Marucci and Dolister fueling Webb's explosive tenor. "All the Things You Could Have Been" is a barely disguised reworking of "All the Things You Are" that showcases all three players. Webb switches to soprano sax (and Marucci to brushes) for a playful, fairly straight-ahead setting of "Have You Met Miss Jones," while Webb returns to tenor for an intense workout of "Alone Together." Webb's passionate blues "Stanley Hills Drive" has the air of John Coltrane's live performances when he asked his pianist to sit out. This enjoyable live set by Mat Marucci and Doug Webb is warmly recommended.
