The first of two volumes called Paris Impressions find Erroll Garner in a joyous, creative mood. Accompanied by bassist Eddie Calhoun and drummer Kelly Martin, the pianist begins with a lively playful take of "The Song From Moulin Rouge," followed by an inspired swinging version of Cole Porter's "I Love Paris." While none of Garner's originals on this album came close to becoming regular parts of his repertoire, they are very much in the spirit of his upbeat personality. The two tracks featuring Garner on harpsichord, his bluesy "Don't Look for Me" and the somewhat monotonous "Cote D'Azur," should be considered historical curiosities, but are still enjoyable in small doses. Although this record and its follow-up volume were reissued together in a two record set, these long unavailable recordings will be somewhat difficult to acquire.
