PARIS 25 features remixes that flesh out the minimalist muscle-and-sinew of VEICULO's most groove-oriented moments and adds three exclusive tracks of similarly inclined material. The excellent EP complements the album, shifting To Rococo Rot's focus--temporarily--from the aesthetics of design to tactile rhythm sculpting. Precise and elegant, with less room for ambient distractions or experimental detours, PARIS 25 showcases the Berlin/Dusseldorf trio's remarkable electronic artistry.
Isolated from VEICULO and meticulously reshaped, "Lift" and "Mit Dir in der Gegend" become snowballing masses of melodic motifs and textural loops. The long shadow of Jamaican dub falls across these intense remixes, audible in To Rococo Rot's strong, skanking basslines and in the echo-diffracted synth spectra of "Mit Dir in der Gegend (Sehr)." Weathering an onslaught of stratified samples and micro-loops, "Dual Use" burrows into the mesmerizing groove To Rococo Rot has excavated somewhere between Tortoise, time, and tide. "History on Discs" strikes up a wobbly, bass-belching, boogie-woogie update of the Kraftwerk/Neu! Autobahn beat, finally dissolving into the sample-sprinkled digital swells of "Days Between Stations."
