In tandem with its affiliated Hidden Agenda, Mud, and Spur imprints, Champaign-Urbana, IL's Parasol Records ranks among America's most consistently interesting independent labels, continually moving beyond the company's indie pop roots to encompass an impressive breadth of sensibilities from neo-psychedelia to alternative country to synth pop (a cross-pollination typified by the inclusion of the Beauty Shop's roots rock take on Depeche Mode's "Personal Jesus"). The third volume in the label's Sweet Sixteen sampler series actually numbers 18 tracks, highlighted by exclusive material from Bettie Serveert (the live "Healer") and the late, lamented Very Secretary ("Signalese," one of the group's final recordings). Also of note: the gorgeous chamber pop of Neilson Hubbard's "Wonderful Pain," the Mezzanines' lo-fi gem "She's Still It," and Jenifer Jackson's noirish "Mercury, the Sun & Moon."
