There are some real obscurities on this Herwin LP. Since the Paramount label was famous for having scratchy surfaces, some of these performances are a bit noisy; in addition Herwin tends to be inaccurate and overly speculative in listing personnel. However true early jazz collectors will enjoy the playing of Blythe's Sinful Five, blues singers Viola Bartlette and Elzadie Robinson, Austin's Musical Ambassadors, the Hotentots, Wilson's T.O.B.A. Band, Jeanette's Synco Jazzers (which has pianist Mary Lou Williams's earliest recordings), D.C. Nelson's Serenaders and the Beverly Syncopators.
