With a largely obscure band list including names like Younger Son of Sam, Jesus Oyster, Notorious P.I.G., Ear Nose & Throat, and Up the Duff, one might expect Parallel Lives: A Tribute to Blondie to feature new-school punk bands who derisively mock the supposed cheesiness of new wave pop. In fact, that couldn't be further from the truth; most of Parallel Lives is devoted to faithful, respectful covers of some of Blondie's best-known songs. Sometimes too faithful and respectful, as a matter of fact. Most of the arrangements and performances are quite similar to the original versions, and many of the lead vocalists shift into their best Debbie Harry imitations. Granted, there are some almost frighteningly good imitations, but in the end, this is more a curiosity than an essential purchase.
