The Firesign Theatre compilation Papoon for President gathers together recordings made by the comedy troupe in connection with various elections over the years. The bulk of the album is given over to the contents of the promotional LP A Firesign Chat with Papoon, in which group members Phil Proctor and Peter Bergman were interviewed by Steve Marshall in 1972 to advance the release of the Firesign Theatre album Not Insane or Anything You Want To. That disc's two sides, "Not Insane! Papoon for President!" and "One Organism, One Vote! The Aftermath!," bookend the CD, taking up 40 and a half minutes of the 68-minute running time. The shorter pieces make fun of Presidents Ford, Carter, and Reagan, along with candidates including Edward Kennedy. Marshall, Proctor, and Bergman seem to improvise their support for George Papoon, who seeks the non-human votes of animals, insects, and organisms with such pledges as "a guaranteed annual year." It's all lightly amusing, if not quite top-drawer for the performers.
