As the home of producers like Madlib and the late J Dilla, Stones Throw Records is a label whose name has become synonymous with groundbreaking experimental music. Though the label started in the realm of hip-hop, it would, under the guidance of founder Chris Manak (better known as Peanut Butter Wolf), become a trailblazing tastemaker with its soul, psych, and electro releases. Examining this history, the documentary Our Vinyl Weighs a Ton tells the story of the label from the perspective of the amazing artists who helped it become the universally respected name it is today. Feeling like a label sampler of sorts, the film's soundtrack features a veritable who's who of Stones Throw artists, offering up cuts not only from the label's legendary talents, but from new blood like Homeboy Sandman, the Stepkids, and Vex Ruffin. With so many great artists, Our Vinyl Weighs a Ton's soundtrack educates as well as illuminates, telling the story of one of music's most important independent labels while offering up a mind-expanding look at the endless possibilities of hip-hop.
