AllMusic Review by

In this classy entry in its series of highlights from various Sun artists' early careers, the Orbison family's boutique record label collects Johnny Cash classics like the brooding "Folsom Prison Blues" and "Guess Things Happen That Way," as well as the cheery "Country Boy" and the singer's version of Leadbelly's "Goodnight Irene." Cash's signature, primitive Sun-era sound is very much in evidence, while the occasional presence of backing vocals, as on "Guess..." and "Ballad of a Teenage Queen," finds the artist on the verge of a more pop-oriented feel.
