Treadmill Trackstar's major-label debut, Only This, is one of the better examples of post-Hootie & the Blowfish acoustic adult alternative pop. Where many of their peers concentrate on rootsy strumming, Treadmill Trackstar have zeroed in on the hypnotic elements of jangle, resulting in a record that's melodic and often enchanting. Lead singer/songwriter Angelo Gianni has also learned the benefits of being cryptic, which gives the group another level of mystery. Occasionally, the group relies too much on atmosphere, letting their songwriting slide, but the best moments on Only This -- including "Shouldn't I Take," "Leveled" and "Pale the Bright Sun" -- rank among the best adult alternative pop has to offer.
