A top-notch stride pianist whose repertoire included ragtime, Jelly Roll Morton (a strong influence), trad tunes, and swing standards, Burt Bales was a fixture in San Francisco in the '50s. This obscure LP (which was reissued by Arhoolie) features Bales playing solo over a two-year period. He is heard throughout in peak form, interpreting such numbers as "I've Got a Feeling I'm Falling," Scott Joplin's "Original Rags," "King Porter Stomp," "I Cover the Waterfront," and a couple obscurities. Well-worth searching for.
