AllMusic Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Many budget-priced compilations don't even come close to having a cohesive theme, which is what makes Sony Music Special Products' On the Country Side such a welcome presence. True, it doesn't contain any real rarities or surprises for collectors, but by concentrating on the band's country material -- such as "Drivin' Wheel," "Rocky Mountain Breakdown," "Fools Gold," "Honky Tonk Downstairs," "Pickin' Up the Pieces," "Magnolia," "Ride the Country" and "Hoe Down" -- it does provide a valuable service for fans who like a particular side of Poco and aren't necessarily concerned about getting all the hits. And since it takes this approach, it's as interesting to longtime fans as it is to casual listeners.
