Jim Knapp's big band plays 11 of his arrangements and seven of his originals on On Going Home. The music is quite complex, and although it always swings in its own fashion, the themes are not too memorable. Even the two standards ("U.M.M.G." and "Donna Lee") are given more modern harmonies and chord structures than usual. However the arrangements are creative and the soloists (which include trombonist Jeff Hay, tenors John Goforth and Rick Mandyke, and trumpeter Jay Thomas among others) are top-notch. This outing, which is easier to respect than to love, grows in interest with each listen and is worth acquiring by collectors of modern big bands.
