St. Mark's Consort are part of a roving group of performers whose gigs are at various Renaissance Fairs, gatherings of the Society for Creative Anachronism, and Pagan festivals (the last explaining the album title and several of the tracks.) In live conditions, the key duo are often augmented by additional players, but in the studio it's just the two of them, using a mix of traditional instruments and electronic equipment. The resulting sound is quite interesting and charming, even though the electronic roots sometimes show a little too much. Some pieces hew closely to tradition, while others, such as "Grimstock," take tradition and run off with it, capering like the proverbial fool. In between, there's much to be found as accompaniment for the art of maypole dancing.
