Probably only a cultural anthropologist could accurately judge whether violinist Joseph Cormier's claim of playing "Scottish" music is accurate. He's been a familiar face at folk festivals for many years, working alongside Cajun fiddlers and French-speaking musicians, and much of what he plays on this disc wouldn't be out of place on any traditional Cajun album. But the menu of old-time songs also has Scotch and Irish antecedents, and Cormier's flawless tone, beautiful sound and facility on these 14 numbers range over reels, jigs, folk tunes and dance pieces. No matter what you call it, it's impressive and enticing.
