AllMusic Review by

SPG's Old School Jams series is a bold rip of the Thump label's more attractive and established Old School series. And while a decent percentage of the tracks that can be found in the SPG series were also made available via Thump, the less familiar label managed to string together four volumes of '70s and '80s disco, funk, and R&B that are almost as valuable. Four discs' worth of those tracks are packaged together in this box set; it doesn't include everything since the third and fourth volumes were double discs. Still, this is a good way to obtain a substantial heap of the era's best singles. Highlights include Taana Gardner's "Heartbeat," Mtume's "Juicy Fruit," the Whispers' "Rock Steady," Planet Patrol's "Play at Your Own Risk," Slave's "Just a Touch of Love," and Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam's "I Wonder If I Take You Home." Most of it is awesome, awesome stuff.
