Oh, You Beautiful Doll Review

by John Bush

A Past Perfect compilation of early Mel Tormé recordings, Oh, You Beautiful Doll has substandard sound and a scattered track listing that makes very little sense to fans or first-time listeners, though it does offer some excellent performances. Ranging from his first major hit ("Careless Hands") to early album pleasantries ("Got the Gate on the Golden Gate," from Mel Tormé's California Suite), the collection has little rhyme or reason, and duplicates much material from an easier-found disc, Capitol's Spotlight on Mel Tormé (Great Gentlemen of Song).
