AllMusic Review by

The songs from Jacques Offenbach's operettas readily lend themselves to light entertainment, and the idea of presenting an evening of his music as an accompaniment to dinner led to this Maguelone release by Quatuor Gastronomique. The ensemble of four French vocalists and an American pianist serve up lively numbers from Geneviève de Brabant, L'île de Tulipatan, La fille du tambour-major, Robinson Crusoé, and other operettas in a program that corresponds to a menu. The singing of soprano Sylvie Bertho, mezzo-soprano Marie-Thérèse Keller, tenor Pierre Catala, and baritone Jean-Marc Salzmann is in a slightly exaggerated comic vein throughout, and the bright accompaniment of pianist Mary Dibbern adds considerably to the festivities. Some prior acquaintance with Offenbach's songs and style may be helpful, because the entire album is sung in French and lyrics are not provided, and some knowledge aids appreciation of the fanciful names of dishes enumerated on the track list. This disc is an upbeat offering that may attract newcomers trying Offenbach for the first time, and it will please those who've already developed a taste for his effervescent music.
