Avernus' debut ...Of the Fallen offers folky goth-metal with alternating male and female vocals in what basically amounts to a second-rate version of Holland's the Gathering. More distressing, however, is the album's shoddy packaging (from the artwork to the numerous misspelled song titles) and amateurish, demo-like sound. While this kind of thing would hardly make a difference on, say, a punk record, here it certainly detracts from the sense of grandeur to which these songs aspire. Of these, the gloomy melodies of "If I Could Exist" and "Still Warm Ashes" show definite promise, but the cliché-ridden Irish folk of "Renaissance" is truly awful. Despite its shortcomings, ...Of the Fallen may still interest serious fans of the Gathering.
