The fourth volume in Nuphonic's excellent compilation series is a taster for the label's forthcoming release schedule circa late 2001 and 2002. As such, there's really no musical focus to this collection, which spans laid-back groove (a new artist, Fug), sensuous urban club music (André Featuring May Yamani), retro synth pop (Cosjam), deep house (Phoney), and moodier techno (from the first solo album by Lionrock producer Justin Robertson). Another excellent addition, especially for electronic-history fans, is an unreleased, reworked track by the late New York club scene veteran Arthur Russell (the focus of an upcoming release on Nuphonic as well). Although veterans used to a more common sound from Nuphonic may be surprised at all this variety, the label's consistent focus on quality is undisturbed.
