The title of Nando Lauria's second outing novo brazil perfectly captures the guitarist/vocalese master's newfangled approach to the ancient and modern rhythms of his native country. Playing with Pat Metheny and Special EFX has honed his modern pop and jazz sensibilities to the point where even the most odd-metered percussion pattern seems both hummable and understandable. Above his soaring freestyle classical guitar and harmony enhancing instruments, he textures his charming secret weapon, a towering voice which wordlessly conveys more passion than most lovelorn lyrics could ever aspire to. This collection is all about dedications, paying homage through carefully woven imagery to the bustle of his hometown port city Recife, the pastoral surrounding countryside, hardworking fisherman and his family. To the uninitiated, the melodic and rhythmic patterns of many of these tunes may seem similar, but a closer listen reveals subtle, beautiful differences. World music has never had a more precise, engaging ambassador.
