Not Fade Away: Opus Collection Review

by Jim Allen

The crucial link between Elvis and the Beatles, Buddy Holly took the raw, unfettered energy of rockabilly and added sharply crafted pop hooks, innovative production touches, and inspired melodic invention. The result was a raft of hits that form a vital part of rock & roll's foundation. The unique rolling tom-tom pattern of “Peggy Sue,” the modified Bo Diddley feel of “Not Fade Away,” the twinkling celeste and (literally) knee-slapping percussion of “Everyday” all proved enormously influential to the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and countless other artists who soaked up Holly's infectious, original style. All the signature Holly tunes are included on NOT FADE AWAY, adding up to a concise summary of the rock-&-roll pioneer's all too brief career.
