As Haitian music edges onto the "world-music" scene, it faces the same hit-hunting crossover pressures as soukous. Ironically, and wisely, new folks Tanpet use soukous as a model for outreach, as soukous used zouk and zouk used compas. They speed up the beat, make the melodies simpler and more repetitive, and sweeten the keyboards and guitars. The result is an intriguing Quatre Etoiles-like quality: commericial, but also unselfconsciously sparkling.
