Night Train to Memphis gathers nine tracks from various albums Mel Tillis recorded for Kapp Records between 1966-70. None of the songs were hits for Tillis, but "Lonely Girl" was a hit for Carl Smith, and "Night Train to Memphis" has been widely recorded. "Tom Dooley" is the song Pam Tillis first sang on the Opry as an eight-year-old, which may have inspired her father to cut his own version. "Okeechobee Ocean," one of several songs written by Tillis, was also recorded by Burl Ives. These album tracks are better heard on the original albums with the hits than cobbled together on a budget LP.
