NICO is a dazzling hour-plus set of music composed by John Cale for choreography by Ed Wubbe. The piece celebrates the life and work of singer, musician, and poet Nico. She was a friend of Cale's and a key part of the Velvet Underground. Six-member string ensemble Ice Nine, an electric guitarist, a keyboard player, and a percussionist perform the music. The album was recorded live during a performance in the Netherlands, and is richly rendered, with a sonic breadth one might associate with a live classical music recording. The moods evoked range from the somber and atmospheric to the playful and witty. NICO is much more intricately composed than Cale's EAT/KISS project (which consisted of music scored for two Andy Warhol films), though both works address similar themes.
