This is a surprisingly modern date for the mainstream trumpeter Randy Sandke. Teamed up with tenor saxophonist Michael Brecker, trombonist Joel Helleny, pianist Jim McNeely, bassist John Goldsby and drummer Kenny Washington, Sandke is in excellent form on eight of his unusual originals, including one ("Elegy For Albert") which also uses some strings. In addition to his fine playing, Randy Sandke's extensive liner notes (which tell the story behind each of his compositions) are quite colorful. This LP has been reissued as part of the Stash CD The Sandke Brothers.
