New Testament consists of lots of loud, jagged guitar that will warm the heart of anyone who likes a real attack on their instrumental music, with Gerry McGee crossing swords musically with Jimmy Page, George Harrison, and Eric Clapton on covers of "Whole Lotta Love," "What Is Life," and more. The originals are a mixed bag that provide a good canvas for the virtuoso playing by McGee and company, who seem to take to the expansive side of early-'70s hard rock very nicely and comfortably, and even manage to have fun with the song selection. Somehow, covering Led Zeppelin and Tom Jones ("She's a Lady") on the same record seems inspired, in a strange, warped way.
