AllMusic Review by

This is the first of two LPs released by Folkways that feature New Orleans jazz bands of the 1920s, many of whom were recorded in their home town. The music is often quite classic although not reissued here in their complete sessions. A fine sampler, this first volume has selections from Oscar Celestin, Armand J. Piron, the New Orleans Rhythm Kings, Brownlee's Orchestra, Johnny Bayersdorffer, Louis Dumaine's Jazoloa Eight, Sam Morgan, Fate Marable and Billy and Mary Mack. Much of this music was also included in Columbia Sound of New Orleans box set of the 1960s but these recordings are well worth acquiring in one form or another.
