AllMusic Review by

A one-time protégé of Wynton Marsalis with a bevy of performance and recording credits to his name, trumpeter Irvin Mayfield is a firebrand jazz musician and pillar of the New Orleans music community. Having played in brass bands as an adolescent and studied at University of New Orleans under Ellis Marsalis, Mayfield's music blurs the lines between jubilant New Orleans Second Line, swinging post-bop, frenetic Afro-Latin rhythms, and gospel music. Named after his regular spotlight gig at the Jazz Playhouse at the Royal Sonesta Hotel in New Orleans, Mayfield's 2015 book and CD package, New Orleans Jazz Playhouse, showcases his holistic love of the Crescent City and its varied music scene. Included within the book are photos and essays, as well as seven discs of live music recorded by Mayfield and others, at the Jazz Playhouse at the Royal Sonesta.
